I have decided to dispose of this magnificent barometer which has been part of my private collection and has taken over 30 years to acquire.
Such barometers are usually the preserve of the very top specialist dealers and shown at the high end fairs
This instrument was made by -P Gally of Clerkenwell London circa 1785.
Barometers by this maker are always of high quality but even by his high standards this example is exceptional.
This instrument cannot be compared to the 1820s Sheraton barometer which are now available for a few hundred but will certainly be appreciated by the connoisseurs who will realise how exceptional this barometer is.
The proportions and overall quality are superb but is has the very rare features of opening and locking wooden to reveal the 10 inch engraved dial.
At the top of the barometer is an adjustable hygrometer . present).
The sides are veneered horizontally and the edges are barbers pole strung in boxwood and ebony.
It is veneered in the finest Cuban mahogany and inlaid with shells.The colour is fabulous.
The quality extends to the edge of the dial which is also inlaid the same as the sides.
It is in excellent condition and only has a flick of stringing missing (illustrated)
The architectural top is original
It is 38 inches long,10 3/4 inches at its widest point and the carcase is almost 2 inches deep.
